City of Angels Update August 2025

Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero. It's easier to build
strong children than to repair broken men and women. (Frederick Douglass)
You angels are indeed modern-day heroes. Your constant influence in children's lives
through your resources, cards of encouragement, prayers, and gifts are helping to build
strong children in South Frankfort. I have been quite nostalgic recently as I have been
going through old newsletters and pictures of my fifteen years at the Kings Center. We
are creating a new website, and I have found cute pictures of our graduates who are
now solid citizens of our community. Some are teachers, some work in the health field,
some for the State, while others have started their own businesses. It's so exciting to
see our children become strong adults.
Recently, Dr. Leanne Hadley, FUMC Associate Pastor, led a drum making workshop
and a drumming worship experience at the Kings Center. She was accompanied by the
FUMC Youth and a dozen FUMC adults. It was a raucous time in spite of the 90 plus
temperatures! I hope you can watch the video on our Facebook page. It's all about
love.....everybody is loved! After they decorated their drums and practiced the
drumming chant (faster and faster) everyone enjoyed a popsicle and a bit of Karaoke.
The kids enjoyed a great summer building new Lego creations, riding bikes, exploring
Frankfort on the Trolly, playing in the FUMC gym, and learning about Shakespeare at
the Grand Theatre. They also used the new grill donated by SFPC to cook hotdogs and
burgers. A special cooking experience was making deviled eggs. It was a bit of a mess
but the outcome was delicious!
Thank you to all who sent your yearly donation/school supplies check. I was able to give
out over fifty $50 Walmart cards to families to help them get ready for school. The
parents were very grateful and the kids liked picking out their own backpacks and
clothes. I wish I had gone to the school on Friday morning to take pictures of all the
excited faces.
Our new floor is beautiful and now safe, thanks to a generous donation! The
downstairs is full of wonderful game boards, tables and books. There is a new chalk
wall that the creative kids love to decorate. It is a cozy yet active play area that comes in
handy during all kinds of weather!
On another issue, the Kings Center is looking for community individuals to join our
Active Board and our Advisory Board. You all are very active and committed angels but
if you'd like to increase your influence, please let me know. 2026 will be our thirtieth
anniversary and we would like input and help in spreading the word about the Kings
Center.
Thanks again for helping to build strong children and letting them know they live in a
caring community. Kay Scott 502-395-1516.
